Indian Fry Bread
2 c flour
1 tsp salt
3 tsp baking powder
1 c water
Mix ingredients & let sit for 10 - 15 minutes. Break off a ball of dough about golf ball size & pat out no thicker than 1/4 inch.
Fry in deep hot oil to a light golden brown, turn ojnce to brown both sides. (Oil is hot enough if a small test piece of dough dropped in the oil begins cooking almost immediately & rises to the top.) Drain bread well & pat with paper towel to remove exess oil. Keep covered in a bowl while cooking to keep the bread warm.
Serving- Usually eaten like bread with soup, stew, or posole.
Variations- Eat with honey, powdered sugar, cinnamon.
Momma’s Chile
2 lbs ground turkey
2 lg onions
2 lg green peppers
2 boxes mushrooms
4 cans kidney beans
5 - 7 cloves of garlic
4 lg cans of tomatoes (diced & crushed OR equivilent of that in fresh!)
Cumin (to taste)
Oregano (to taste)
Dried red pepper (to taste)
3 T Worchestire Sauce
1 sm bag of frozen corn
jalapeno peppers (fresh or canned…adjust accordingly!)
Salt & Pepper to taste
Brown turkey, onions, garlic peppers, & mushrooms. Add tomatoes, kidney beans (with juice), corn, & jalapenos together in a lg stock pan & begin simmering. When turkey mix is completely browned, add it to tomato mix. Simmer until thoroughly heated. Serve over rice, with a bread of your choice.
Honey of an Oatmeal Bread (For bread machine)
2 cups water
2 Tablespoon vegetable oil
1 / 2 cup honey
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup rolled oats
4 2/3 cups flour
2 teaspoons dry yeast
Directions:
1. Place ingredients in bread machine in the order suggested by the manufacturer.
2. Select Light Crust of Basic setting and press Start.
